OUR GOAL
Community Midwives is a family-focused business providing midwifery services throughout the Four Corners region. Centrally located, the office and clinic is in downtown Durango, Colorado. Home birth services are provided in the clients’ home including Durango, Cortez, Mancos, Dolores, Bayfield, Ignacio, and Pagosa Springs in Colorado. And in New Mexico the communities served are Aztec, Bloomfield, Farmington, and Kirtland.
Community Midwives is run by Juanita Nelson LM, RM, CPM. The goal of Community Midwives and Juanita is to empower women and their families-guiding each one to trust in the natural process of birth and connect with the deep wisdom inherent in all of us. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually throughout pregnancy leads to a healthier birth. Normal, natural birth empowers women and families giving them a foundation of trust from which to build parenting and life skills.
The woman and her family, together with Juanita form the basic care team. Informed decisions are based on the specific needs of the woman. Family members are encouraged to contribute in whatever form feels appropriate to the woman. This is a woman-centered practice. That means that the woman receiving the care gets to define who is involved and what is done. Juanita is there to contribute her experience, knowledge, and understanding and to access the woman into other care should the situation require it.
It isn’t enough any more to say we want a healthy mom and baby. That’s a given. To birth a baby into the world with a minimum of intervention, into an environment that is free of fear and filled with love, sets the stage for healthier, happier children and strong, clear thinking parents. Pregnancy and birth are no longer an event to get through as quickly as possible. They become instead the process through which we transform ourselves into more conscious, loving people.

I just wanted to say that the incredible Juanita Nelson from Community Midwives safely delivered both of my babies at home here in Pagosa Springs. She is extremely knowledgeable, understanding, comforting and above all, nurturing. She is the mom-type figure you want at your birth 🙂 I never once felt nervous or hesitant, I knew from the moment I met her that she was the midwife for me. Her experience and background has made her a skilled birth attendant and I always felt confident that I was in good hands. She always has your, and your baby’s best interest at heart.
